More Kenyans to Access Safaricom 5G Network before the End of 2021
More
Kenyans are likely to have access to the super-fast internet services (5G
network) by the end of 2021.
This
follows plans by Telecommunications giant Safaricom to increase 5G network
sites to 200.
Safaricom
unveiled the fifth-generation internet in March 2021 with only 15 sites, but it
now seeks to take it to more towns across Kenya.
The company’s Chief Executive Officer Peter Ndegwa recently revealed that they are planning to
use up to 200 sites by putting to test the high-speed internet, and maximize on
the sharply rising demand for internet dependency among Kenyans to do their
daily activities, inkling businesses.
Business Daily notes that the roll-out of the 5G network
is part of Safaricom’s strategy to expand its data business amid the slow growth of
the voice calls income due to competitors offering cheaper prices for the
service.
“This
year is a trial phase and we intend to have 150 to 200 sites coming from the
first use case of homes, especially in places where we do not have fiber,” Ndegwa
is quoted by Business Daily.
“We
will be able to test on such areas and help customers in terms of speed and
reliability and from next year we can be able to commercialize a bit faster but
I will come with that at the appropriate time,” he added.
Currently, the 5G network is only available in Nairobi, Kisumu, Kisii, and Kakamega.
However,
few Kenyans can still access the super-fast internet due to the high cost of
mobile phones that support 5G network with one costing between Ksh70,000 to
Ksh90,000.
A good
number of Kenyans are also still using 3G networks because of the cost of 4G network-supported
mobile phones that range from Ksh5,0000 to Ksh7,000 on average.
An
upgrade of access to the 5G network for more Kenyans will be a major boost to
people and businesses who depend on the internet to use be it at the home, workplace, or when traveling.
The
super-fast internet has the ability to support up to a million devices in every
square kilometer, compared to a 4G network that supports only up to 100,000
devices within the same area.
