3 KEY PILLARS OF SUCCESSFUL DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

 Innovation and Technology in Businesses.

Digital technology is more important than ever for the success of any business especially in this century. The ubiquity of giants like Google and Amazon has changed customer's expectations of online services.

The Covid-19 pandemic hasn't only accelerated the future of work, it's pushed businesses into digital transformation. Beyond remote working and zoom meetings, organizations large and small have had to find ways to digitally engage with everyone from their customers and employees to their supply chain and operate their businesses through technology.

But how do you start making a successful technology investment? How do you identify your needs? How do you prioritize what's important?

Our goal in this blog post is to describe the key steps you need to take to achieve a successful digital transformation, improve your efficiency and become more profitable. Let's get down to business:-

#1. Customer experience

While it's customary to start with vision, I say start with your customers or clients. You already have a business that has attracted customers and without them, you don't have a business. Understand how your audience is evolving, trends in how they experience their current world and how they intend to experience it in the future. After all, digital transformation is all about applying digital solutions, processes and ideas to enhance the customer experience. Understanding the core tenets of what needs to be evolved along the customer's journey provides you with an early roadmap of your business evolution. This might require evolving your talent pool, culture and technology paradigm. One way to achieve this understanding is to gather your key customers along with people from your company and experts in your field and ask them a few basic questions: What would they buy from you, what would they not and why? What would make them buy more? How does your company stack up against competitors? Do you know our customers inside out? If yes what kind? This deliberate customer focused approach will reveal a ton- some of it possibly painful to hear. But this step is absolutely critical to the success of your transformation.

#2. Knowledge of technology

Technology is the cornerstone and main trigger that can launch new products, improve efficiency and so on. Company leaders should without fail be familiar with new technologies, know what they are and what they involve. We must rethink executive training, which is usually more focused on teaching soft skills and increase the learning of technology to help executives successfully lead digital transformation processes. Digital transformation pays off. A study has shown that companies whose boards of directors have digital know how obtain higher financial results as compared with those whose members have little or no experience in digital business. This clearly shows that you need to have a know how on how technology works to succeed in your venture of transformation.

#3. Cultural change

A successful digital transformation also involves a philosophical change for the business. Key to this success is involving staff at all levels of the company. The Kaizen approach, for example can be a tremendous level for cultural change. Developed in Japan in the 1940s, Kaizen consists of forming multidisciplinary teams composed of employees directly or indirectly involved in a process. These problem-solving teams discuss ways to identify and resolve sources of waste. The idea is to make gradual but quick changes in order to optimize practices and then support them with digital solutions. The Kaizen approach is an example of tools that can be used to modernize a corporate culture to make it more effective. In a traditional company, decisions are often made in silos. For instance, the operations manager makes decisions for operations, the sales manager for sales, etc. In a process-centric approach, decisions are made by all the teams in the areas affected and contribute to cross-sectional synergy. This approach helps:
  1. Break down silos
  2. Focus on the company's overall activities
  3. Focus on customer needs

Final words...

Digital transformation is no longer an option. Companies will permanently change the way they do business. And not just how they interact with employees, but also the way they interact with customers-directly and digitally. Executive teams and boards of directors will be held accountable for making or not making this pivot. Use this moment to take note of the gaps in your business's ability to function digitally.
