5 TYPES OF PEOPLE YOU NEED IN YOUR NETWORK

 Networking 101;

When it comes to networking, saying hello and getting someone's card is easy. The real challenge is identifying those people who could truly help you in your professional life.

But not all networks are built the same. Simple exchanges of business cards and the occasional email won't cut it in today's connected world. But neither will a hyper-connected echo chamber of like minded individuals. By diversifying our connections and crafting bridges that we normally wouldn't, be open countless doors to develop and succeed.

Well, look no further. Here are 5 people to find and get into your network, pronto, not only for career advancement, but to help you align your goals.

#1. The visionary

The visionary often sees things you can't or aren't able to just yet! This person will motivate and inspire you. Your current job might seem like a dead end, but one conversation with your visionary, and you'll be ready to clock in early and blow everyone away with your fresh ideas and renovated energy. Spotting a visionary is pretty easy. They are always out meeting new people, working on new and exciting projects themselves and moving and executing on their ideas. If you want to find a visionary in your field, start hanging out at events that are aligned with your career or passion.

#2. The Super connector

The super connector is the heart of any network. They know everyone, and everyone knows them. With this community, they make introductions a lifestyle, connecting individuals that can benefit each other. By having a strong connector in your network, it's possible to further grow your network and reach out to the right people when you need to.

#3. The sponsor

The sponsor sees what you do not see in yourself. They would be considered your "Big Joker" in the game of spades, meaning it outranks everything. Their recommendation or referral would help you win the opportunity and goal you set out to achieve. If you do not know anyone like this, that is ok! Start networking or having conversations with those around you, and you would be surprised!

#4. The Mentor

Mentors are often associated with the early stages of our careers; our first boss, favorite professor, or family friend that helped guide us during our entry into the workforce. But mentors can be useful throughout our careers, whether we are starting a new business, making a career change or just need advice along the way. The best mentors are those that believe in you and guide you through moments of distress. They may not always be information based support, such as career advice, but emotional support as well.

#5. The realist

This is the person in your network who will keep you grounded and create a nice balance with the visionary. You want ownership of the new account the office just snagged? The realist will help you organize your thoughts and create a plan for approaching the topic with your boss. The realist is certainly not the pessimist-a true realist will help you find ways to improve on your ideas rather than just shut them down and force you to think clearly and level headedly on the matter. The realist wants you to have the tools you need to succeed! To find the Realist in your life, be on the lookout for people moving up in their careers and getting promotions and plum assignments because they're completely aware of what needs to be done to get to the next level. Then, next time you're dealing with a challenge or opportunity, ask to pick their brains on what's worked so well for them.

Final thoughts...

All too often, we associate a good network with size; the more people you know, the better. But the reality is that the quality of your connections is the most important part of any community. Finding the right individuals, from the connectors to the realists, will set you and your network up for success and help you navigate your unique career journey.
